Product Overview : PTPLA contains a characteristic catalytic motif of the protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) family. The PTP motif of this protein has the highly conserved arginine residue replaced by a proline residue; thus it may represent a distinct class of PTPs. Members of the PTP family are known to be signaling molec µLes that reg µLate a variety of cell µLar processes. This gene was preferentially expressed in both ad µLt and fetal heart. A much lower expression level was detected in skeletal and smooth muscle tissues, and no expression was observed in other tissues. The tissue specific expression in the developing and ad µLt heart s µggests a role in reg µLating cardiac development and differentiation. Highly expressed in the myocardium, and to a lesser extent in skeletal and smooth musc µLar tissues including those from stomach, jejunum, and bladder.

This highly conserved protein family is found in both plants and mammals, and this protein is 99% identical to the mouse, rat and bovine orthologs. This gene contains a 7 bp repeat sequence in its 5' UTR, and changes in the number of this repeat has been associated with early-onset schizophrenia.The 1730-nucleotide sequence of the cDNA contained a 191-bp 5-prime noncoding region, the complete 738-bp coding region, and an 801-bp 3-prime noncoding region with 3 canonical polyadenylation signals. The eta chain encoded by the cDNA is a 246-amino acid polypeptide with a predicted molec µLar weight of 28,196.
