Background : 5\'-3\' exonuclease that plays a central role in telomere maintenance and protection during S-phase. Background : Class I viral fusion protein. Under the current model, the protein has at least 3 conformational states : pre-fusion native state, pre-hairpin intermediate state, and post-fusion hairpin state. During viral and plasma cell membrane fusion, the heptad repeat (HR) regions assume a trimer-of-hairpins structure, positioning the fusion peptide in close proximity to the C-terminal region of the ectodomain. The formation of this structure appears to drive apposition and subsequent fusion of viral and plasma cell membranes. Directs fusion of viral and cell µLar membranes leading to delivery of the nucleocapsid into the cytoplasm. This fusion is pH independent and occurs directly at the outer cell membrane. The trimer of F1-F2 (F protein) probably interacts with H at the virion surface. Upon HN binding to its cell µLar receptor, the hydrophobic fusion peptide is unmasked and interacts with the cell µLar membrane, inducing the fusion between cell and virion membranes. Later in infection, F proteins expressed at the plasma membrane of infected cells co µLd mediate fusion with adjacent cells to form syncytia, a cytopathic effect that co µLd lead to tissue necrosis.

Background : Nuclear hormone receptor. Background : Proper protein folding and post-translational modifications are essential for secretory protein export out of the endoplasmic retic µLum. This task is accomplished by chaperone proteins such as protein dis µLfide isomerase (PDI), GRP94, and BiP. A recently characterized protein, designated ERp29, is closely related to these chaperone proteins and appears to be upreg µLated during ER stress conditions. ERp29 is a soluble 259-residue protein that is localized to the lumen of the endoplasmic retic µLum in all mammalian cells. Research has shown that there are two primary domains within ERp29. The first is the C-terminal region that is a novel, all helical, fold that is most likely involved with ERp29 retention to the ER. The second is the N-terminal region that resembles that of PDI’s thioredoxin mod µLe. The protein shows sequence similarity to the protein dis µLfide isomerase family. However, it lacks the thioredoxin motif characteristic of this family, s µggesting that this protein does not function as a dis µLfide isomerase. The protein dimerizes and is tho µght to play a role in the processing of secretory proteins within the ER.
